When Baby Birds Learn To Fly

Guest post by Cheryl Conley, Vice President – TWRC Wildlife Center
It’s that time of year again: baby bird season. You may see baby birds wandering around outside of their nests. When a bird leaves the nest it needs practice learning how to fly, just like toddlers need practice learning how to walk. This process is called fledging. At this point the baby doesn’t have proper feathering to allow flight and may be on the ground a few days until its wing and tail feathers grow a little more. The parents stay nearby and tend to the baby. The best thing you can do for the bird is to leave it alone. If it’s in harm’s way because of dogs and cats, you can move it but keep it as close to the nest as possible.  For more information on wildlife or to volunteer, call TWRC WILDLIFE CENTER at 713-468-8972 or go to www.twrcwildlifecenter.org.

Community Garage Sale Scheduled for April 6 – Rain or Shine

It’s time for our Oak Park Trails Fall Community Garage Sale! The date is Saturday, April 6, 2012, rain or shine. Our garage sale weekends have been very successful in the past and it is a great time to clean out and organize with some spring cleaning. The OPT HOA will be providing banner signage at the major entrances to the community to help with promoting the sale.

Oak Park Trails holds community garage sales 2-3 times during the year. Holding your garage sale on this weekend will help make our neighborhood safer and cleaner and in addition will increase attendance and sales at your event. Many neighborhoods around us only conduct garage sales twice a year and do not allow for them at any other times.

Please remember when placing signs throughout the neighborhood it is illegal to place  signs in public right of ways, esplanades and on traffic signs. The sheriff’s department can and will enforce the law and will issue citations and fines up to $1000 per sign. Please be considerate and remove any signage used for garage sales. It is against deed restrictions to post this type of signage and not remove it as soon as the event is over.

Please also be mindful of the traffic in front of your home that your garage sale will  create and ask shoppers to park so that no driveways or road ways are blocked.

Contact us at board@oakparktrails.org if you have any questions.

See the article on page 4 of this newsletter for tips on having a successful garage sale.

Happy selling!

Event of the Year – Easter In The Park on March 30

Easter in The Park is scheduled for Saturday, March 30 from 1:00 to 3:00. Taking place at the Oak Park Trails Community Park, we’ve packed this event with parades, egg hunts, food and fun for children of all ages. So much fun, Easter In The Park has quickly become our most popular and attended event. A special surprise is planned for the event this year, but you have to be there to see it!

Here is a schedule of the events so you won’t miss anything!

1:00 pm – Check In: arrive and check in for the Easter Parade, games and egg hunts

1:15 – Easter Parade: Decorate your bikes and wagons, dust off those Easter Bonnets and let’s have a parade! Our Easter parade will take us around the OPT park with noisemakers and a festive way to kick off the event!

1:30 – Easter Egg Hunts! We will have areas for three age groups to participate in a traditional Easter Egg Hunt with eggs and goodies for all. Areas for 0-3 years old, 4-7 years old and 8-12 years old will be filled with eggs ready to fill your Easter baskets!

1:45 – 3:00pm – Game Stations will be scattered around the park/tennis courts area, along with stations for fun Easter tatoos, coloring station, refreshments, and a moonwalk.

Everyone is welcome to bring a lawn chair or spread out a blanket in the park, watch the fun and come out to celebrate the season with your neighbors!

We still have volunteer opportunities available to help out on the day of the event. If you would like to help (teenage volunteers are welcome too!), or if you have any questions, please email us at board@oakparktrails.org (mailto:board@oakparktrails.org) .
